SPRUCE Whole Ecosystems Warming (WEW) Environmental Data Beginning August 2015

Description

This dataset provides a record of the half-hourly averages of automated environmental data collected from the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experimental site within the Marcell Experimental Forest in northern Minnesota, USA. Data was measured in 12 SPRUCE plots (4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20, and 21) from 2014-01-01 to 2025-12-31. Collection began during deep peat heating (DPH) and continued throughout whole ecosystem warming (WEW) manipulations for the SPRUCE Project (Hanson et al. 2017). In August 2015, WEW was initiated at 5 warming levels (+0, +2.25 +4.5, +6.75 and +9 °C) with 2 plots per warming level. DPH measurements were underway before the initiation of WEW heating treatments and both operated until 2025-12-31. Measurements include air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, snow and ice depth, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These comprehensive environmental data can be used to understand the environmental conditions inside SPRUCE environmental chambers throughout the durations of the experiment and can be paired with other data for modeling and analysis. 

This dataset includes 15 files in comma-separate values (*.csv) format: 12 plot-level environmental data files for each SPRUCE plot, two data files corresponding to figures from Hanson et al. (2017) that support key analyses of the performance of the WEW systems, and one data file containing snow and ice depths, as well as one compressed folder (*.zip) containing previous versions of the plot-level files. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma-separate values (*.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

This Version 2.0 supersedes and replaces previous versions of this dataset. In Version 2.0, released 2026-07-02, corrections to previously released values were made, the title and abstract was updated, new plot-level data for 2025 was appended, a file-level metadata file and data dictionary were added, and new authors were added. Please see the Version History Table in the user guide for additional details.
